STONEHAM MA. - Current and former members of the Middle School community got together Thursday afternoon to honor former long-time principal Bill Orman with a portrait that will hang in the school's library.

Orman served as Middle School principal from 1971 until his retirement in 1995. He previously had served as assistant principal at Stoneham high school, beginning in 1967.

Orman was introduced at Thursday's brief ceremony by current Middle School Principal James Andreottola and Middle School PTL Past President Dottie Farrell.

"We wanted to acknowledge Mr. Orman's commitment to the Middle School and his ability to make a difference in the lives of the Middle School students," said Farrell.

Orman thanked the audience for this "significant honor" and said he truly missed the students, staff and townspeople.

"It was my pleasure to serve the community, parents and students," said Orman. "I offer a heartfelt thanks to all of you."

Farrell said the idea to have the former principal's portrait hang in the library began at Orman's re-tirement dinner in the fall of 1994. Farrell worked with former PTL Presidents Wendy Warren, Martha Panther-Buckley and current President Linda Curtis to make the por-trait a reality.

Orman's portrait was taken by Purdy Vantine Studios of Melrose.
