STONEHAM, MA - Among other things, the start of the New Year also signals the beginning of the local political season.
Although we are still exactly three months away from the local election, six potential candidates for three different seats, have already taken out nomination papers.
The largest crowd of candidates can be found in the race for Town Clerk, which is wide open after long-time Town Clerk Annamae Arsenault announced her retirement and intention to run for Selectman.
The latest entry into the Town Clerk mix is John Bracciotti of Broadway. The former popular Stoneham pharmacist joins Assessor John Hanright and Assistant Town Clerk Kathleen Sullivan in the Town Clerk's race. All three have taken out their nomination papers.
The last day to obtain nomination papers is February 13.
In addition to Arsenault, Selectman Patrick Jordan has also obtained nomination papers to seek another term on the board. Selectmen Chairman Albert Conti has not yet indicated whether he will seek a fourth term as a Selectman.
The only other potential candidate who has grabbed nomination papers is long-time Assessors Richard Mangerian, who is seeking re-election
There is just one seat open on the School Committee and it is currently being held by Steven Migliorini who is completing his first term on the board.
The Planning Board also has just one seat up for grabs. Frank Federico is up for re-election for a five-year term on the Planning Board.
Single seats on two other town boards are also available. The seat on the Board of Health currently held by Tom O'Grady and a spot on the Housing Authority occupied by Fred Mosley are up for election.
In addition to the Selectmen, the only other board to have two seats available is the Library Board of Trustees where Susan Doucette and Susan Waldman Fixman are up for reelection.
The last day to file nomination papers, with the correct amount of signatures, is March 3.
