STONEHAM, MA - The fascinating field of astronomy was brought to life for Central School first graders by their elders at Stoneham High School last Thursday as Steve Jackson's senior Astronomy class presented the youngsters with a fun and interactive lesson on the subject.

As part of their semester grade, the presentation, in the high school gym, required the seniors to relay their knowledge of astronomy to the first graders through the development of a lesson plan that included activities and games.

According to Central School first grade teacher Mary Jo Stanton, the exercise was "wonderful" as it enhanced the youngsters own knowledge of the subject that is now part of the new science curriculum at the elementary level.

Over l00 first graders participated in the exercise where the highlight was the viewing of the stars and constellations in the student-designed star lab. The students also enjoyed learning, from the seniors' perspective, of the sky, moon, sun, constellations, earth rotation, and the Greek and Roman legends.

Jackson stated that he was "impressed" by his students' performance which was all caught on videotape for his review for semester grading.

This year's project with the first graders was "very involved in terms of planning," according to Jackson, who has directed other classes to work with elementary and middle school students when the curriculums have been complementary.

After the presentation, the first graders enjoyed their lunches in the high school cafeteria, which they considered another awesome experience.
