STONEHAM, MA - The number of races for the April town election has not grown in the past week, but the political landscape continues to become more interesting with additional candidates pulling nomination papers this past week.

A fifth candidate pulled papers Friday for one of the two available seats on the Board of Selectmen.

Zoning Board of Appeals associate member Charles "Chuck" DeCoste Jr., 31, joins incumbents Albert Conti and Patrick Jordan as well as former Republican Town Committee Chairman Gordon Perks and long-time Town Clerk Annamae Arsenault in a race full of strong potential candidates.

The last day to obtain nomination papers is February 13.

The first nomination papers for the one available seat on the School Committee were obtained Tuesday by Robert Fields III.

Fields, who ran unsuccessfully for the School Committee two years ago, is the only candidate at the present time for the School Committee. School Committee incumbent Steven Miglioini, Tuesday night, said he was still undecided whether he would seek a second term.

The only other incumbent who has not taken out nomination papers is Board of Health member Tom O'Grady, who has indicated he will not return to the board after this term. However, local pharmacist Benedict DiRusso Jr., 39, of Danby Road, has taken out papers for the Board of Health seat.

Incumbents who have taken out their nomination papers include long-time Assessor Richard Mangerian, Housing Authority member Fred Mosley, Planning Board member Frank Federico and Library Trustees Susan Doucette and Susan Waldman Fixman. (It was incorrectly reported in last week's Independent that Fixman had failed to pull her nomination papers.)

So far no residents have expressed interest in opposing the above mentioned incumbents leaving the only remaining race for Town Clerk. The three solid candidates for that position are former Stoneham pharmacist John Bracciotti, Assessor John Hanright and Assistant Town Clerk Kathleen Sullivan.

The last day to file nomination papers with the Board of Registrars, with the correct amount of signatures, is February 17.
