STONEHAM, MA - Citing time constraints, School Committee member Steven Migliorini made it official Tuesday, announcing he would not seek a second term on the board.

When Migliorini did not quickly obtain his nomination papers last month it was widely speculated that he would not be returning to the School Committee. Speculation became truth this week when Migliorini said he would not be visiting the Town Clerk's office to get nomination papers before Friday's deadline.

"Primarily it is a time constraint issue," said Migliorini, a local dentist. "Commitments to my personal life and practice at this point have made it difficult to pursue another three years on the board."

Migliorini said the decision to not seek re-election was a difficult one.

"I really enjoyed getting involved with decisions involving the education of our youth and for that reason I have mixed emotions about leaving," said Migliorini. "It was a productive and positive three years. But my family has to come first."

He believes his departure comes at a time of transition where he would not be walking away from any projects.

"My three years on the board coincided with Supt. (Ellen) Bueschel's tenure and the School Building project approval process. Both of those items are coming to a close," explained Migliorini. "Plus we have improved the Occupational Education Department at the high school, adjusted graduation requirements and are nearing completion of Time and Learning changes at the high school which I would like to go see resolved by the end of my term. I believe I am leaving at an appropriate time."

Migliorini said the controversy regarding the proposal to move his dental practice from Montvale Avenue to the former Jewish Temple on Franklin Street and the ensuing opposition from the neighborhood, did not play a role in his decision.

"It was purely a time constraint reason," said Migliorini.

As of Tuesday, the only person to obtain nomination papers for the School Committee was Robert Fields III.

Charles DeCoste Jr. joins incumbents Albert Conti and Patrick Jordan as well as former Republican Town Committee Chairman Gordon Perks and long-time Town Clerk Annamae Arsenault in the race for Selectmen.

The three solid candidates for Town Clerk are pharmacist John Bracciotti, Assessor John Hanright and Assistant Town Clerk Kathleen Sullivan.

Local pharmacist Benedict DiRusso Jr. has taken out papers for the Board of Health seat.

Incumbents who have taken out their nomination papers include long-time Assessor Richard Mangerian, Housing Authority member Fred Mosley, Planning Board member Frank Federico and Library Trustees Susan Doucette and Susan Waldman Fixman.
