Stoneham telemarketer fined by Attorney General

STONEHAM, MA - A Stoneham telemarketer who solicited charitable donations has been fined $500,000 and ordered never to do business in Massachusetts again.
Judge Regina Quinlan issued the default judgment Friday in Suffolk Superior Court against United States Charitable Publications and its Stoneham owner, William L. Twohig Jr., who had been accused of fund-raising fraud and had been sued by Attorney General Scott Harshbarger.
According to published reports, Twohig had numerous phone solicitation centers in Massachu-setts and elsewhere, Harshbarger said.
In April, Harshbarger filed suit against Twohig while his company was raising money for the California-based Disabled Peace Officers Association and the Texas-based American Veterans Relief Funds.
Harshbarger said the company raised money in 45 Massachusetts communities saying it would be used to buy crutches, wheelchairs and other items for veterans. In reality, Twohig's operation gave a few food baskets, books and games--worth about $650--to veterans hospitals.
