STONEHAM, MA - The likely change in ownership at Boston Regional Medical Center (BRMC) will bring with it some new facilities on the grounds of the Stoneham hospital, ac-cording to its potential new owner.

Doctors Corporation of America (DCA) President Bryan Breckenridge announced Thursday night that a 120-unit retirement center will be constructed on the hospital site once the joint venture is approved by the state.

DCA has offered to purchase 80 percent of the financially troubled hospital for $52 million--a sale which is currently being reviewed by the state's Attorney General's office.

"This hospital has a beautiful 40 acre site which overlooks Spot Pond," said Breckenridge. "There is great potential here. We hope to strengthen the services already in place and increase access to the community."

The proposed retirement center would be located just west of the recently-opened skilled nursing and assisted living complex which sits on the south end of the complex. Although owned by Life Care Centers of America in Tennessee, the assisted living complex has a work-ing relationship with BRMC.

Breckenridge said his company had just finished negotiations to bring the retirement center to the location. He estimated that the center would employ between 50-60 people.

In addition, Breckenridge said his company is exploring the possibility of introducing a fam-ily health fitness center on the BRMC property.

"A fitness center would of course draw people to the site and we also have a responsibility to promote prevention," said Breckenridge, projecting the fitness center would employ over 100 people. "We want to be involved in the community. We want to hear what types of serv-ices you want."
