Thieves make off with over $40,000

Well over $40,000 in sporting equipment was reportedly stolen from a freight company early Sunday morning.
Police say that several boxes containing sporting equipment were stolen from trailers owned by ABF Freight System Inc. located on Cedar Street near the Woburn town line.
Stoneham detectives and agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigations are still investigating the incident.
According to Detective George Sullivan, the FBI was brought in because ABF had crossed state boundaries with the freight before the larceny occurred. The freight had been transported from Dayton, Ohio to Stoneham and had yet to be unloaded, he explained.
Lieutenant Joseph DelRossi said that a rental van which was found in Wakefield and is believed to have been stolen from Cummings Park in Woburn was used as in the heist. The van was transported to the Stoneham Police Station and is currently undergoing a search for fingerprints.
The thieves are said to have gained entry to the property after taking down a fence which surrounded the property while security guards were off duty.
"I think that was probably done on the way out," Sullivan explained.
He said that the area is usually populated by incoming and outgoing trucks, but, at that time, it appears as if the location was vacant.
"They have guys coming and going in there all weekend," he said. "One of the guys came through (Sunday afternoon) and noticed the stuff open."
Taken from the truck, Sullivan said, was $48,000 worth of Nike sneakers, several boxes of Timberland clothing and eight additional boxes containing various items which was scheduled to be transported to Wilmington.
"Obviously the investigation's ongoing," Sullivan said. "We have some evidence but nothing's concrete right now."
