STONEHAM, MA - The weather outside was frightful, on Thursday night, so the delight of witnessing signing of the new South School construction contract had to be postponed.

The School Committee will sign the contract with AMG Construction Co., of Stoughton at its meeting this Thursday night. The historic action will officially kick off the demolition and construction phases for the new South School on Summer Street.

In addition to School Committee endorsement, the contract must be signed by School Building Committee chairman Dan Hogan, Town Counsel William Solomon and Town Accountant Ron Florino.

A pre-construction conference was held Wednesday morning of this week. This conference provided a forum for the general contractor to meet with all the subcontractors on the project to work out instructions and schedules and to answer questions.

"He's anxious to get his stuff on the site and get started," stated Hogan regarding AMG.

According to Hogan, the current time-line projects demolition to begin in March or April. In addition to the old school building slated for the wrecking ball, three Summer Street houses are scheduled to be demolished at that time as well. These properties were purchased by the town and transferred to the ownership of the school department last year, and are being incorporated into a larger South School site plan.

Construction is estimated to take 16 months and the new school is due to open to students in September of 2000.

The rebuilding of the South School is the first of the four elementary schools to be addressed in the school rebuilding program. The rebuilding and relocation of Central School, along with the renovation of the Robin Hood and Colonial Park Schools will follow.

The $39 million project has been approved for sixty-three percent state reimbursement.
