Town seats may remain unfilled

STONEHAM, MA - There hasn't exactly been a stampede at the Town Clerk's office with the date for filing papers now closing in. Activity for pulling papers to seek election and re-election to town boards and committees remains light with only 10 individuals having already filed for the 10 available slots.
According to Town Clerk John Hanright, "It's been very slow."
At the present time, three individuals have come forward to run for the available Board of Selectmen seat. In addition to John Biggio, whose term will expire in April and who has already pulled papers for re-election, Seward Road resident Gordon Perks and Whipple Avenue resident Darin Leahy have thrown their hats into the ring. Leahy is an active participant at Town Meeting. Perks pulled papers for both the Board of Selectmen and the Planning Board on January 21. He is presently the lone candidate for the one open Planning Board seat.
Two seats will be available at the annual Town Election on April 6 for the School Committee. Duncklee Avenue resident Jeanne Craigie made it known that she will again run for her seat on the committee when she pulled papers on January 12. A week later, Charles Street resident Thomas Noonan took similar action in hopes of filling either Craigie's or current School Committee member Paul Melkonian's seat. Melkonian has yet to decide about his future on the committee.
Dinanno Road resident Rocco Ciccarello pulled papers early, on January 9, in his attempt to reclaim his seat on the Library Trustees board. At the present time, he is the only candidate for the board's two available seats. Current Trustee Marc Grimaldi announced Tuesday morning that he would not be seeking re-election.
On the Housing Authority, Amelio (Mickey) Marrocco of Spring Street will attempt to maintain the only available seat. He is currently running unopposed and is the only candidate among the 10 to have submitted his papers to the Town Clerk's Office.
Town Moderator Michael Rotondi, a Franklin Place resident, will try to keep his perch at the head of the town meeting floor on April 6. He is also currently running unopposed for the position.
Martin Louis Way resident William Jordan is, at present, the only person vying for the one vacant Board of Assessors post. Town Clerk John Hanright announced last month that he will not attempt to reclaim the seat in 1999.
Finally, Board of Health Chairman Michael Rolli, a Crescent Avenue resident and long-time board member, will be running for another term in his, the only available seat. He is alone in his bid at this time.
Only one week remains for those who wish to pull papers for one of the available seats. The last day to pull papers is February 12 and the last day to file papers is Tuesday, February 16. Each date has a deadline of 5 pm. Those pulling papers must have them signed by 50 registered residents before submission.
