After 12 years as Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce, recently retired Patricia Kilty was feeling at loose ends. Then she saw an article regarding an opening on the Library Board of Trustees and decided to take a plunge into the upcoming local election.

Kilty is one of two candidates running for the two open slots on the board. (Last week, the Independent incorrectly reported that two candidates were vying for only one position.)

Making sure she would not be running against long-time family friend and candidate for re-election Rocco Ciccarello, Kilty waited for the deadline to near before submitting her nomination papers to the Town Clerk's office.

"It's not a major time commitment but it is something of value...(something) to keep me glued to Stoneham," she said.

Ciccarello looks at his bid for reelection to the board as a way of giving back.

"I want to give back to the town...that has given me an education and is a great place to live."

Ciccarello will be embarking on his second full term. Prior to his current stint with the board, he filled in a vacancy for half a term and has found the experience rewarding.

"I really enjoy working with the staff...to make the library a better place. It's a great board to serve on," he said.

Ciccarello is proud of the board's work a few years ago on the development of a five-year plan. The library is currently in the third year of that plan, and Ciccarello reported that progress is ahead of schedule.

Two major areas of importance, he said, are the ability of the library to keep up to date with computer technology and growth of the book budget.

"We need to make sure we can deliver what people need," and credited the commitment of the Board of Selectmen, the Finance Board, and Town Administrator Jeffrey Nutting in their support of the Stoneham Public Library.

"It's hard to say no to a group that offers so much free. Probably the only free thing left in the world is the public library," Ciccarello stated.

Kilty stated that she will take on the office with no preconceived ideas for making changes, but does possess an eagerness to keep the community's best interests in mind as she serves her three year term.

One resident who signed her nomination papers asked her to see what she could do to increase the library's stock of books on audio tape.

"I already have my first folder started," she said in response to the man's concern.

"Like everyone on the library board, the community's interest will always be foremost. We have a great library."

The last day to register to vote in the town election is March 17. Election day is April 6.
