STONEHAM, MA - Essex County prosecutors made it known earlier this week that they have a main suspect in a spree of Boston area bank robberies which includes a heist from Eastern Bank in Redstone on March 9.

According to Essex County prosecutor Sherry Smith, Peabody resident Susan DeAngelo, 33, is responsible for the string of armed robberies which began in late February and continued through mid-March. The prosecution was further bolstered by the conviction of DeAngelo for armed robbery in 1993 after she held up a Medford CVS with a fake handgun.

According to Stoneham Detective Richard McCarthy, the SPD has yet to I.D. the woman as a suspect in the Eastern Bank heist. He did, however, reveal that, while a male had entered and robbed the bank, a woman was seen by a witness driving the getaway vehicle.

A similar series of event was reported after the February 25 robbery of an Arlington bank.

According to Smith, the pair had also hit banks in Everett, Lexington, Wilmington and Boston.

DeAngelo was picked up by police in Peabody on Monday afternoon on warrants and was charged with possession of hypodermic needles.

In a Boston Globe article, her lawyer, John Seabrook, said, "She has no idea what the Commonwealth is talking about. Whatever (police) may suspect, there are no charges."

Smith was set free after posting a $5,000 bond.
