STONEHAM, MA - The Board of Health wants a new town doctor.
At a May 24 meeting, Chairman Michael Rolli said Dr. Kenneth Codin of Stoneham has shown interest.
The current town doctor, Dr. Marc Pifko, M.D., a family care practitioner from the Boston Regional Medical Center (BRMC), receives $1000 a year to act as an adviser and consultant to the board.
"Dr. Pifko has not responded to our recent letters," Town Nurse Margaret Neylon said; she said she believes Pifko is no longer interested in the position.
According to Ben DiRusso of the Board of Health, Pifko lives in Newburyport, and his office has moved from Stoneham to Winchester as a result of recent problems at BRMC.
"Dr. Codin is retired, and he said he would serve for free," Neylon said.
Board of Health Vice-chairman Lou Golini reminded the board that law requires them to have an advising doctor.
The board decided to talk to both Pifko and Codin and work out a solution most beneficial to the town.
In other business:
A massage clinic will not open for business in the basement of the Visiting Nurse Association at 12 Beacon Street.
Massage operator Carol A. Cormier petitioned the Board of Health on Tuesday, May 24, for the necessary license to operate the massage establishment.
After vocal opposition from Beacon Street neighbors, the board denied Cormier's request.
