STONEHAM, MA -Now that Stoneham's millennium celebration is officially underway, (see related Flag Day story), committee members are hard at work pulling the loose ends together on upcoming events.

On Wednesday night, a general meeting of Town of Stoneham Millennium Council provided an opportunity for committee chairs to discuss the status of their programs.

Spotlights on the Millennium Stage is a program designed to bring luncheon concerts to various points in town.

The first in the musical series is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. on June 28 at the Senior Center. Details are still sketchy at this point, but co-chairmen Deirdre Quigley and Kerry Kropilak, both Stoneham High School students, are hard at work lining up series performers.

Stoneham Square and the lawn of the Stoneham Public Library are scheduled to host the two remaining summertime luncheon performances.

Another Millennium event which is open not only to residents but to their four footed best friends as well, is the Canine Good Citizenship Pro-gram.

This program, sponsored by the American Kennel Club, works with dogs and their owners on skills aimed at making dogs good citizens in the community by behaving respectfully at home, in public places and in the company of other dogs.

Optional training sessions will be held throughout the summer with the main event, which consists of a 10-point test of demonstration, confidence and control, scheduled for sometime in September.

Committee chairman Jesse Simone reported that a great effort is currently underway to organize the event, along with other canine related programs leading up to the September affair. Simone anticipates great interest in this program which has its own mascot, an English Toy Spaniel named Mary Jane.

Organizers of Parade 2000, tentatively scheduled for September 17, 2000, have already found that it's not too early to be putting this celebration together.

"Logistics are unbelievable for a parade," said Elm Street resident John Hanright as he and his co-chairman Frank Geary have already found.

Approximately 200 invitations have been sent thus far to various groups and organizations, welcoming their participation in the Stoneham parade, with still many more to go.

While still their infancy, Hanright described the parade plans as "well underway."

Stoneham High School Sophomore Annmarie Borchelt has volunteered her talents to the Millennium Council event committees in the design of program covers for the various Millennium events.

Stoneham has been granted the status of Millennium Community by the White House Millennium Council. The certificate attesting to this currently adorns the walls of the Town Hall Hearing room.

Millennium Council co-chairman Franklin Street resident Paul McDonald and Stoneham High School Junior Amanda Fitzgerald encourage all those wishing to get involved in the planning and running of the any events, to contact the council chairpersons or any of the event committees. In addition, participation at the events is strongly encouraged.
