Longtime Stoneham resident said his first Mass at St. Patricks

STONEHAM, MA - The Rev. Brian E. Smail, O.F.M., a longtime resident of Stoneham, celebrated his first Mass at St. Patrick's Parish on May 16, 1999. Fr. Brian was ordained a Priest at St. Francis of Assisi Church in New York City the previous day, May 15, 1999. He is a Franciscan Priest with the Holy Name of Jesus Province.
Fr. Brian is a graduate of St. Patrick's School and Stoneham High School. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Business at Boston College and worked as a Computer Systems Analyst with BayBank for a number of years prior to entering the Franciscan Order. He entered the Franciscan Order in 1992 as a postulant in New York City and went on to enter the Franciscan Novitiate in Brookline, Massachusetts in 1993. He completed his Master of Divinity studies at Washing-ton Theological Union, graduating on May 9, 1999. Upon being ordained a Deacon in Washington, D.C., in January, 1999, Fr. Brian was assigned to St. Camillus Parish in Silver Spring, Maryland. He also studied Spanish in Merida, Mexico and Guadalajara, Mexico. He completed his Clinical Pastoral Education Program for Hospital Chaplaincy at Cabrini Medical Center in New York City in 1998.
Fr. Brian has been assigned to St. Anthony Shrine in Boston. Father Smail is the son of Ernest and Shirley Smail of Minot Street.
