Sixteen children injured in Fells bus crash

STONEHAM, MA - A school bus loaded with children careened down a hill, uprooted a tree and knocked over a street light, causing minor injuries to 16 children, police said.
Defective brakes caused the 11:25 a.m. accident Thursday on the Lynn Fells Parkway near the Melrose border, said Sgt. Tim White of the state police.
White said 73 people--66 of them children--from Dorchester Neighborhood Service in Boston were riding on the bus. They were on a field trip to the Breakheart Reservation in Saugus.
"The driver basically lost his brakes and tried to slow down against a guardrail," White said.
The bus' owner, Zurriya Transportation, Inc., was cited for operating a bus with faulty brakes.
