STONEHAM, MA - The Bear Hill Association has agreed to let Stoneham take a portion of the golf course for use as a drainage system.

"The board of directors felt unanimously that this is something we should do for the town," said Charles Doherty, President of the Bear Hill Association Board of Directors.

Public Works Director Bob Grover said the town plans to build a dry detention basin abutting Buckingham Terrace and a small wet pond along the Sweetwater Brook near the third hole of the golf course.

"This will improve drainage especially along the brook and for the Buckingham condos," Grover said. " And it will reduce the burden on the whole system.

"Bear Hill has been very cooperative."

The system, drafted by Fay, Spofford and Thorndike, is designed to deal with a moderate amount of water, not a severe storm.

Grover explained that all communities along the Aberjona River, into which Sweetwater Brook drains, are asked to design systems in this way for "consistency" — so that one community is not dumping water on another.

Stoneham will pay for the project out of $500,000 appropriated in May for drainage projects. Grover said the Bear Hill project will be in the $100,000 ballpark.

Acceptance of easements from Bear Hill and Buckingham Condominiums will go before town meeting in Oct. These easements allow trucks to go in to do the work.
