Stoneham receives new cable channel

STONEHAM, MA - On Jan. 15, 1999 a new municipal government channel will debut before the Stoneham cable audience.
The channel, tentatively 17 on the cable box, will be run by Town Clerk John Hanright out of the Clerk's Office at Town Hall.
"Our job is to tell people what's going on," Hanright said.
Information posted on channel 17 will include Town Meeting warrants, agendas for the meetings of town boards and minutes of those meetings.
Funding for the new channel will come from $70,000 Media One owes Stoneham under the cable provider's contract with the town.
The town will receive two new VCRs and a character generator as well as new microphones and lights for the Town Hall hearing room, a portable camera and training for volunteers who wish to learn how to operate the camera.
According to Selectman Darin Leahy, a member of the cable sub-committee, volunteers will have access to the camera to tape town government meetings or events.
Hanright said he and Brian Clapp, Manager of Information Systems for Stoneham, are already investigating what hardware and software will be necessary to run the channel.
"This is another technical tool to help the people become involved with town government," Hanright said.
Leahy said selectmen will give the final yes or no on the project soon, possibly at their next meeting in early November.
