STONEHAM, MA - Barbara Mahoney is retiring from her position as Director of the Senior Center on June 30, 2000, after 10 years on the job.

Mahoney earned her bachelor's degree in gerontology from UMass Boston at the age of 62 before taking over at the Elm Street Senior Center.

"Now I can sleep late," she jokes.

Mahoney hopes to use some of her free time to visit her six children living across the country, including Mary Anne in Maui.

Mahoney worked as a teacher's aide in Lynn, managed a Catholic book store, and worked for the Lynn Geriatric Support Group as well as volunteering at the Senior Center before taking over in 1990. She worked the entire time while attending college.

As Director, Mahoney oversaw the renovation of the Elm Street site in 1996-97. She attended many building meetings and considers the renovation to be the greatest accomplishment of her tenure.

Of her years of volunteer service and work with the seniors of Stoneham, Mahoney says, "I've enjoyed every minute."

Mahoney says she will miss her co-workers, but not to worry..."I think I'll still check in on them."
