Bldg. Inspector Appointed

Town Administrator Jeff Nutting notified selectmen in their informational packets last week that he had appointed Interim Building Inspector Gene Argiro as the permanent Building Inspector.

The selectmen had seven days in which to make a motion to reject the appointment. The March 21 selectmen's meeting passed without such a rejection, so Argiro is in, pending the requisite physical.

Argiro has been Interim Inspector since Robert Columbus' retirement in January 2000. Argiro began his service to the town in February 1998 after being appointed as Acting Inspector by Nutting.

Bread strike

Local sub shops and restaurants may soon feel the crunch of a 1,500 person bread strike by Teamsters against Interstate Bakeries Corporation.

The strike has stopped deliveries from the J.J. Nissen plant in Biddeford Maine, which serves the New England region.

The owners have requested a liquor license, but the hearing has not yet been scheduled.

Felecia's of the North End was in business for 50 years serving stars like Frank Sinatra and Bob Hope as well as many local folks.

Solamini and Jim Puro hope to bring the same high quality high-class operation to Stoneham, Fred Puro said.

"We have a lot of work to do in there before we open up," Fred said.

Skate Park open

The Stoneham Skate Park off Pomeworth Street is open. Public Works workers reattached rails last Friday and checked the equipment. Everything looked good, so skateboarders and in-line skaters once again have a safe and legal place to have fun.

Stoneham Theater

The Symes family got approval of a site plan for the Stoneham Theater building. They told selectmen that they plan to renovate the theater to present movies, live theater and musical performances.

The plan showed 338 seats, a concession stand for popcorn, soda and candy and a large stage. The work should be complete within a yea
