BOSTON, MA - Stoneham boasted 11 registered runners in the 104th running of the Boston Marathon on Monday. After the 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to Boston, Elijah Lagat of Kenya won the men's division with an official time of two hours, nine minutes and 47 seconds. (2:09:47). Catherine Ndereba, also of Kenya, took the women's trophy with a time of 2:26:11.
Just over 24 minutes later local residents began a proud representation of Stoneham spirit to thousands of screaming fans and an international television audience.
Seamus Daly, 40, led the Stoneham contingent with an official time of 2:50:59. This pace was good enough to put Daly in 501st place overall.
Marc Eaton, 31, finished 4,198th with a time of 3:24:34.
Paul Tiernan, 29, finished 5,545th in 3:28:57.
John Mitchell, 60, finished 10,566th with a time of 3:57:01.
Robert Boyd finished 10,889th with a time of 3:59:05.
Nina Cammarata, 27, was the first Stoneham woman to cross the line. She finished 13,174th overall, 4,279th among women runners, with a time of 4:22:01.
The final Stoneham runner with a confirmed finish was Stoneham Police Officer Renee Lehmann, 25, in 14,905th place overall, 5,099 among women, with a time of 4:57:44.
Kelley Parks, 31, made it more than half of the way, at least, but no officials results were available for her past 25 kilometers.
Erik Dilibero, 35, Natalee Webb, 43, and Hector Zarate, 57, had qualified as official runners, but no race information was available for them.
Many other folks may have run unofficially, but 26.2 miles is 26.2 miles whether you have a number pinned to your jersey or not - congratulations to all.
A special run
Roy Dennehy, a friend of Bennett and the late Nancy Rudomen of Stoneham was running Monday to raise money for Dana-Farber.
"We will exceed $30,000," Dennehy said. "I feel so humbled and blessed that God has used myself and Nancy as instruments to make a difference by supporting 'some day a world without cancer.'"
Dennehy, 55 of Andover, finished the marathon in 4:12:46, good enough for 12,452nd place.
But placing high wasn't his goal. He wanted to help, to help his friends and everyone who has suffered and struggled with cancer. And he has.
