Common construction is coming soon

STONEHAM, MA - Town Administrator Jeff Nutting said the construction contract for the Town Common should be signed by the end of next week.
The town's architects are checking the references of Omni of Lynnfield, the low bidder. If everything looks OK, then Omni will get the contract and get started.
"The job is supposed to take 120 days," Nutting said.
At a recent selectmen's meeting Nutting said the work should be close to complete by Town Day Sept. 16. But unforeseen events, such as a strike or an extraordinary stretch of bad weather rule out any guarantees.

Making building easier
For a long time builders have complained about the erratic permitting and approval process in Stoneham. The law is complex, and so is the process, but Community Development Director Steve Sadwick has proposed a strategy to make things easier for everybody.
Sadwick has asked for the selectmen's blessing to set up a Departmental Review Committee consisting of representatives from the police, fire, public works, building, health and planning departments.
Together this group could issue recommendations on projects entering the approval process. Working together could eliminate contradictory advice, which builders say wastes their time as they go from one source to another changing plans.
Ideally, this process would also save time for town officials. Hearings would not have to be rescheduled and issues rehashed because of one piece of key, unverified information.
Selectmen gave Sadwick the green light to set up the new committee last week.
Cherry sheet money
According to cherry sheet projections from the state, Stoneham will receive $7,859,712 for fiscal 2001.
In comparison Reading will get $11,090,922; Woburn will get $13,397,264; and Winchester will get $5,413,296.
