New cable provider comes to town

STONEHAM, MA - oSelectmen granted a 10-year cable license to RCN-Beco L.L.C. at the June 6 meeting of the board, introducing competition for MediaOne into the Stoneham market.

Per the license, RCN will provide the following: an 860 MHZ system throughout Stoneham within 24 months of signing; two-strand fiber I-Net within three months of the completion of the cable system, with four strands added based on demand to designated locations, to be completed within three months after the completion of the cable system, 150 residential drops/outlets for the Stoneham Public Schools, plus an additional 15 per year; high speed internet access, with host serving, for municipal and school use, or $8,000 if the town uses another host; three public access channels; annual fees of a minimum of $35,000; and another $150,000 over the first five years for capital improvements.

A spokesperson quoted a rate of $31.95 for an 80-channel basic cable package. He said it would take around 16 months to get RCN up and running in Stoneham.

<li> The Attorney General's Office has received 61 complaints on the (617)727-8400 consumer hotline set up to deal with folks burned by Wedding Perfections in Stoneham.

Marcia Cohen of the AG's Office said eight of the angry callers have already filed written complaints.

The brides and bride's maids want their dresses or their money back from Teresa Giannino of Saugus, owner of the 62c Montvale Avenue shop.

The investigation is ongoing.

<li> Town officials have decided that the Franklin Street municipal parking lot will be two-hour parking beginning sometime in the near future.
