Teachers sign new contract, RCN to occupy Maynard Moore building

STONEHAM, MA - The Stoneham Teachers Association and the School Department have reached an agreement on a new contract.

The new contract gives teachers a 10 percent salary raise over three years: two percent in 2001 and four percent in 2002 and 2003.

• Selectmen granted site plan approval of Joe Cunningham's proposal to transform his 430 Main St. property into a computerized internet, telephone and cable routing center, or hub, for tenant RCN.

Earlier this month the selectmen granted a cable license to RCN, a New Jersey-based, national multi-media distributor.

The facility will be unmanned, meaning no permanent everyday employees will work there. But RCN techies will come and go to fix problems with the various services provided by the company.

• One of the town's new voting machines is stationed in Town Hall. Any interested voter can take a test run with a model ballot to see how the new system works.

• A joint meeting of the Stoneham Parade Committee and the Chamber of Commerce will be held in the Town Hall Auditorium on Thursday, June 22, at 7 p.m. to discuss the impact of the Sept. 17 Millennium Parade on local businesses.

• Inspections of Stonehill Towers are scheduled for upcoming weeks. Paul Werzanski, the resident who first brought attention to renovations done without permits at the Stonehill Drive apartment complex said he spoke only to insure his personal safety.

• At their June 20 meeting Selectmen nominated member Darin Leahy to serve on the recently formed citizens group, Stoneham against Racism and Hate. Leafy accepted.
