STONEHAM, MA - oParking: Selectmen and Town Administrator Jeff Nutting agreed at the June 20 selectmen's meeting to wait until parking data is analyzed before converting the Franklin Street public lot into a two-hour parking zone.
The town originally announced that all spots in the lot not already demarcated as two-hour parking would be so posted by July 1. But the selectmen told Nutting that they wanted to wait for the results of a parking survey of Stoneham Square businesses before making any changes.
Nutting began distributing questionnaires last week. The survey asks businesses to return the form by July 7.
The survey asks how many spots businesses need for their customers and employees in order to "develop a plan that addresses the needs of the customers and employers."
oWater work: Work began on the replacement of the Franklin Street water main on June 26. The Department of Public Works is installing a 12-inch diameter main in place of the deteriorating, 70-year-old, 10-inch main.
"This will increase water volume to the area, which was the lowest in town, according to a fire safety study," said Public Works Director Bob Grover.
Pubic Works has rigged a network of hoses to bring water service to homes along the work site while construction proceeds. Fire hoses run from hydrants connected to undisturbed mains outside the work area. These hoses run along Franklin Street with smaller hoses connecting to individual homes.
Residents are not being charged for water or sewer while the hoses are hooked up.
oWho's in charge: Public Works Director Bob Grover and Community Development Director Steve Sadwick will fill in for weeks one and two, respectively, of Town Administrator Nutting's vacation, per Nutting's orders.
So to report any major catastrophes, call Grover this week and Sadwick the next.
oIndictment: Daniel Deniso, 39, of 62 Main Street was indicted by a Middlesex Grand Jury on Wednesday, June 21, on one count of possession of an explosive device.
Deniso was treated last week at Mass General Hospital for injuries he suffered as a result of an explosion, which blew off several of his fingers, according to Stoneham Police.
The State Police Bomb Squad and federal agents from the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Agency have been investigating the matter.
The District Attorney's Office said an arraignment date has not yet been set.
oSenior Center: Jane Lavender of Melrose has accepted the position as Stoneham Senior Center Director.
oCentral School: Town Administrator Nutting signed a contract with Pembroke-based Gale Associates last Friday, hiring the environmental engineering firm to test the railroad right of way outside school property for contamination.
Gale has already conducted such tests in the new Central School construction zone, for which remediation is ongoing. The cost of remediation to date is $15,000, according to the minutes of the June 21 Building Committee meeting.
The Building Committee has scheduled a "public information hearing" to discuss the Central School project. The meeting is set for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 12, in the High School Library.
