STONEHAM, MA - Franklin Street "I was young with a full head of hair when Franklin Street reconstruction was first discussed," Selectmen Chairman Pat Jordan said.

This week the project was put out to bid.

Stoneham officials have been trying to convince Mass Highway to repair the crumbling street since the late 1970s.

Jordan credited the persistent efforts of Town Administrator Jeff Nutting and Community Development Director Steve Sadwick with getting the money from the state.

"They were at the meeting where the state decided where to spend the money, and other communities weren't," Jordan said.

According to a statement from Governor A. Paul Cellucci, the Franklin Street reconstruction project is part of an effort by the state to spend more than $700 million a year on road and bridge projects across Massachusetts.

The entire 1.25 miles of Franklin Street will be reconstructed, including sidewalk and drainage improvements, installation of wheelchair ramps and granite curbing and traffic signals at the Pine Street and Summer Street intersections.

New Hire

Diane Murphy of Stoneham, a 19-year veteran of the Public Works office, is the new Assistant Treasurer and Collector for Stoneham.

Murphy will begin in several weeks. She replaces Clara DiMarco who retired earlier this year.

Primary Election

You know who you voted for, but we don't yet. The Stone-ham Independent will have election results from the Sept. 19 State Primary Election in our Sept. 27 edition.

The real excitement is going to be in the General Election. Signs for incumbent State Rep. Paul Casey (D-34th Middlesex) and Republican challenger Mike Rotondi were competing for attention outside the Town Hall polls Tuesday.

The candidates are competing for the votes of Stoneham precincts 1, 2 and 3. Rotondi and Casey have been spotted going door to door and planting lawn signs across the landscape. The race looks tight.
