STONEHAM, MA - Selectmen voted last week to support Article 9, Franklin Street citizen John DeGeorge's proposed revision of the special town meeting by-law.
If passed, the Town Code will require "...the warrant for the October meeting or any other special town meeting, shall be open for the insertion of articles for a period of not less than 14 days and shall close at least four weeks prior to the scheduled town meeting date. Notice of the warrant open and close dates shall be published in some newspaper in the town within seven days after the warrant is open."
oGerard Cunningham and members of the Stoneham World War II Committee want to explain what's behind Article 5.
The National World War II Memorial will be constructed on the Mall in Washington, DC to memorialize the contributions of every American who played a role in winning World War II.
The American Battle Monuments Commission was charged with the task of constructing the National World War II Memorial and raising the necessary funds from private sources.
Cunningham, as local representative of the memorial campaign, is asking the town to donate $22,300, an amount approximately equal to $1 from each resident. The Selectmen and Finance Board support the request.
oThe Stoneham Town Code is posted on the Internet at the Web site of Public Library: www.noblenet.org/Stoneham.
Citizens can access the Internet at the library free of charge.
oPeople living in the Buckingham Terrace area will be happy to hear that the town drainage project promised will begin Nov. 1.
Town Engineer and Public Works Director Bob Grover is confident that the project will limit the flooding which resident have dealt with for years.
oDisabled or ill residents who cannot make it to the polls can still vote by absentee ballot.
No forms or correspondence is necessary; simply get a ride to the polls, and election workers will bring a ballot out to the car and then back to the ballot box.
oConservation Committee member Robert Conway, answering a question from Friends of the Fells President Hubert Holley, said that the Commission has jurisdiction over the MDC land off Pond Street where a hockey arena has been proposed.
If this project moves forward, the Conservation Commission will be involved.
"There are wetlands back there," Conway said.
