Election 2000 brings many choices; Vote Nov. 7 at Town Hall
Published on November 1st, 2000
STONEHAM, MA - Stonehamites will cast votes for U.S. President, Regional Vocational School Committee and dog racing — yes or no, among other questions and offices on the Nov. 7 General Election.
Polls at Town Hall open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. People in line by 8 p.m. will be allowed to vote, but election workers will be watching to prevent late arrivals from sneaking into line.
Town Clerk John Hanright expects an 80 percent turnout from Stoneham. The main attractions, based on talk around town, will be the Presidential election and the race for State Representative in the 34th District (precincts 1, 2 and 3 in Stoneham) between incumbent Democrat Paul Casey and Republican Michael Rotondi.
The only difference on the ballot for residents of Stoneham will be in the State Representative's race. Those citizens in precinct 1, 2 and 3 will have a choice between Casey and Rotondi. Residents of precincts 3, 4 and 5 will see one name, unopposed incumbent Democrat Mike Festa of the 35th Middlesex District.
Nov. 6 is the last day to come to Town Hall and sign up for an absentee ballot. Except for overseas ballots, all absentee ballots must be returned to Town Hall by Nov. 7. Absentee ballots from overseas must be postmarked by Nov. 7 and arrive at Town Hall by Nov. 17.
Again, remember to fill in ovals. The town has a new system; no more connecting the lines.
The full list of offices on the ballot are as follows: U.S. President and Vice President, U.S. Senator, U.S. Congress-man (Seventh District), Councillor (Sixth District), State Senator (Third Middlesex District), State Representative (Either 34th or 35th Middlesex District), Middlesex Clerk of Courts, Middlesex Register of Deeds, Middlesex Register of Probate, and Regional Vocational School committee races from the 12 member communities.
There are also eight ballot questions (see editorial page).
Hanright urges voters to read the questions before entering the polls. Information booklets were mailed to voters' homes. Extra copies are available at Town Hall, 279-2650.
