STONEHAM, MA - For anyone who has ever wanted to give up smoking, the Great American Smokeout day on Nov. 16 presents a great opportunity. Smokers can seize the moment and join with Americans all over the country who would like to stop smoking.

Tobacco smoke is related to a number of illnesses. At our organization we are particularly concerned about the effect of smoking on asthma and allergies because:

One in every 18 people suffers from asthma and one in every five has an allergy.

Tobacco smoke is a major preventable trigger of asthma and allergy symptoms.

Both smoking and second-hand smoke can bring on life-threatening asthma symptoms. It increases the frequency of asthma episodes, and the severity of symptoms such as shortness of breath, wheezing, chest tightness, and bronchial constriction.

Children of mothers who smoke are twice as likely to develop asthma. They visit emergency rooms for asthma attacks more frequently, and need more medication to treat their asthma.

It is important to stop smoking if you have asthma. It is important to stop smoking to protect those most vulnerable to the respiratory effects of second-hand smoke. If you want help to stop smoking, call 1-800-TRY-TO-STOP.
