STONEHAM, MA - As the year 2000 winds toward a close Selectmen and townspeople have some big things on their minds and agendas.

Tax rate

The total value of all residential and commercial property in Stoneham is $1,714,807,739.

Selectmen approved the Board of Assessors’ recommendation to distribute the tax levy so that commercial property owners shoulder 112 percent of the burden in 2001.

The rates for the new year will be $15.38 per $1,000 of taxable residential property versus $17.60 per $1,000 of taxable commercial property.

The 2000 rates were 14.51 residential and 16.57 commercial.

Tree lighting/Fire memorial

On Dec. 3 the first ever holiday festival and Christmas tree lighting will brighten the new Stoneham Town Common. The fun begins at 3:30 p.m.

On a serious note, a moment of silence will be observed at 6:13 p.m. with lights dimmed to remember the six Worcester firefighters who died on Dec. 3, 1999, in the Worcester Cold Storage fire. The fateful call came into the Worcester station on that day at 6:13 p.m.

The Common celebration will include an ice sculptor and Santa Claus himself. The tree lighting is scheduled to top off the holiday festivities at dusk.

Town Government

Tuesday night Townspeople and Selectmen spoke with each other and Mass Department of Housing and Community Development policy analyst Marilyn Contreas about changing town government.

Contreas went over options that have been discussed in this paper and others several times before. And the usual 40 to 50 people were in attendance.
