STONEHAM, MA - A great evening was had by all, as the Stoneham Business and Community Educational Foundation held the third annual Holiday Door Contest this past weekend. Doors of all color and design were presented in full décor as three judges and several board members paraded around town for the official viewing.

The judges arrived at each house by way of limo, kindly donated for the evening by Barile Funeral Home. Fortunately the weather held out as everyone hopped out of their car to admire each door. The troupe was greeted with wreaths of all shapes and sizes, and ice skates complimented a few doors. Wrapped presents added a finishing touch for others, while a giant snowman greeted the judges at one house.

As the judges scored each house, comments such as "crisp," "creative," and "beckoning" could be overheard. Some of the criteria included: creativity, whimsy, entertainment value, use of color and use of natural materials. All the houses looked great, and competition was steep this year, but by the end of the evening the judges announced the winners.

First prize ($200) was awarded to the O’Riordans of 102 Green St., and second prize ($100) was awarded to the Piacopolos family of 21 Crystal Drive. For third place ($50), the judges actually had a tie—the Carrolls of one Ferdinand St. and the Barrys of 114 Marble St. An honorable mention was also awarded to the Angelos of 66 Robin Hood Road.

The SBCEF would like to thank our three judges, Ms. Estelle Bond Guralnick of Traditional Home, Mr. Randy Kottwitz of the Stoneham Theatre Ensemble, and Ms. Susan Larson of Boston Ballet and Dance Umbrella, for their enthusiastic participation. Sincere gratitude is also extended to Barile Funeral Home and Gay’s Flower Shop and Greenhouses, Inc., for their support. The SBCEF would also like to thank those who gave donations and of course, those who entered a door, without which this contest could not be possible. The proceeds fund educational programs for the youth of Stoneham.

For anyone interested in viewing these creative doors, the route was as follows: 43 Ellen Rd., 1 Ferdinand St., 3 Stone Ave., 59 Perkins St., 3 Windsor Rd., 17 Fieldstone Dr., 8 Summit Rd., 114 Marble St., 25 Dean St., 37 Lincoln St., 46 Lindenwood Rd., 15 Country Club Rd., 490 William St., 27 Girard Rd., 24 Crosby St., 16 Constitution St., 66 Robin Hood Rd., 24 Bonad Rd., 20 Melba Lane, 102 Green St. and 21 Crystal Dr.
