STONEHAM, MA - Michael McDermott, 42, of 33 Bartlett St. in Haverhill allegedly shot and killed seven of his coworkers at Edgewater Technology in Wakefield on Tuesday morning, including Janice Hagerty, a wife and mother from Stoneham.

McDermott, according to Assistant District Attorney John McEvoy, walked into the first floor offices of Edgewater Technology at 175-178 Albion Street in Wakefield shortly after 11 a.m. on Dec. 26 and began shooting. McDermott was armed with a semi-automatic handgun, a shotgun and an AK-47 machine gun.

Seven people were killed: Hagerty, 46, of 44 MacArthur Road in Stoneham; Paul Marceau, 36, of Melrose; Cheryl Troy; Jennifer Bragg Capobianco, 29, of Wakefield; Craig Wood, 29; Louis Javelle of Nashua, N.H.; and Rose Manfredi, 48, of Lexington. No one else was injured.

Police officers from Stoneham responded to aid officers from the Wakefield Police and State Police on the scene at the Harvard Mills office building at the corner of Albion and Foundry Streets in Wakefield. Police evacuated the building and used the St. Joseph Church across Albion on Tuttle Street as a base of operations for gathering information from witnesses and comforting them. Fr. Michael Steele of St. Joe’s has offered the services of his parish to counsel and aid anyone affected by this tragedy.

Upon entering the building Tuesday morning, Wakefield Police found McDermott sitting on the floor with his guns; the officers subdued and arrested the suspect without firing a shot.

McDermott was charged with seven counts of murder. He was arraigned in Malden District Court this morning.

Theories have surfaced suggesting that an IRS plan to garnish McDermott’s wages from Edgewater Technology motivated the alleged shooter.

Edgewater Technology designs software to help companies run their Web sites more effectively and employs around 250 people at the Wakefield site. The company also has offices in Alabama, Arkansas, Minnesota and New Hampshire.

McDermott joined the company last March.
