STONEHAM, MA - The Stoneham Against Racism and Hate group is planning what members hope will be the first annual Stoneham celebration of Martin Luther King Day for 7 p.m. on Jan. 15 at the Stoneham Theatre.

“We are excited to have children from the Boys & Girls Club dancing as well as performances by children from Colonial Park School, Robin Hood School and Central School,” said Cheryl Sanders, the group member organizing the event.

Sanders’ only worry is about seating. Little kids always draw a crowd, and since the Stoneham Theatre & Ensemble is donating the space, admission will be free.

The Theatre’s Producing Artistic Director Randal Kottwitz said, “Our mission statement reads, in part, that we want ‘to reflect and enhance understanding of (the community’s) cultural and ethnic diversity.’ This is a great way to do so.”

Admission is limited to 350, so don’t be late.

“The event will be a tribute to Dr. King’s dream of stopping hate and violence dedicated to the seven dead at Edgewater in Wakefield,” Sanders said.

Sanders says that she hopes the event will grow to involve the entire town in years to come.
