Election Update, More names and new strategies

STONEHAM, MA - Across the board new candidates are jumping into Election 2001. And one School Committee candidate says that she will defer to another...

New hats in the ring

Political newcomer David H. Sheils of 85 Collincote St. is running for the one open School Committee seat. School Committee member Mary Carey is not running for re-election. Daniel Moynihan and Terri Ghannam have also pulled papers.

Former Selectman John W. Biggio of 26 Emery Court is running for Planning Board. Former Appeals Board member Mark E. Shamon of 80 Washington St. is also running for the one open Planning Board seat.

“I want to bring a more comprehensive approach to Stoneham planning,” Shamon said. “And we have to move more carefully with big projects... like Boston Regional.”

Loretta DeVincenzo of 57 Brookbridge Road, a member of Stoneham Parents for Healthy Schools, is running for one of the two open seats on the Board of Selectmen.

Selectman Al Conti is not running for re-election, but incumbent Pat Jordan is. Former Selectmen Jim Juliano and Tony Kennedy are also in the 2001 race along with current School Committee member Mary Pecoraro.

And Benedict J. DiRusso, Jr. of 20 Danby Road is running for re-election to the Board of Health.

The Town Election is April 3. The deadline to pull papers is Feb. 9. The deadline to return and certify them is Feb. 13.

No, you first

Terri Ghannam pulled papers for School Committee last week, but she says that she will not run against Moynihan. If Pecoraro decides to resign, opening a second seat, Ghannam will run. But if only one seat remains open, Ghannam says that she will defer to Moynihan.

Sheils is also competing for the spot.
