STONEHAM ,MA - Retired U.S. Army General Fred F. Woerner, former Chief of the U.S. Southern Command, accepted a $22,300 donation from the people of Stoneham to the National World War II Monument at the Feb. 13 Selectmen’s meeting.

Woerner is the Chairman of the American Battle Monuments Commission in charge of the World War II project. At the October 2000 Town Meeting Stonehamites voted to contribute to the effort to build a World War II Monument in Washington D.C. by donating an amount equal to $1 per citizen.

“Your generosity, along with millions of Americans, has made this (World War II Monument) possible,” Woerner said to the gathered crowd in the Town Hall Auditorium.

Woerner, a two-tour veteran of the Vietnam War and recipient of the Bronze Star who teaches International Affairs at Boston University, was the guest of the Stoneham World War II Committee and Town of Stoneham at Felicia’s Restaurant on Main Street before the meeting.

Town races final

No new candidates joined the April 3 Town Election races last week, the last week to pull nomination papers. And as of 5 p.m. on Feb. 13 all signed papers had to be in to the Town Clerk.

Three of the people who pulled papers did not return them: Loretta DeVincenzo and James Juliano will not run for Board of Selectmen, and Terri Ghannam will not run for School Committee.

The races are as follows:
