STONEHAM - MA –

Nutting’s farewell

The Town of Stoneham said good-bye to eight-plus year

Town Administrator Jeff Nutting at a party held Monday night at the Senior Center on Elm Street.

Nutting will become the new Town Administrator in Franklin, Mass. next week.

Selectmen and other Stoneham dignitaries thanked Jeff for his years of dedicated service and wished him well in the future. Good luck, Jeff.

Articles planned

Franklin Street resident John DeGeorge filed eight citizen’s petitions for the May Annual Town Meeting.

DeGeorge’s plans were reviewed in last week’s edition.

The most significant proposal asks townspeople to consider splitting Town Meeting into two phases with a day to discuss and amend articles and a subsequent secret ballot election day for final approval of all articles.

“This was the main objective when we formed Citizens for Effective Government,” De-George said. The group is an informal committee working to improve Stoneham government through procedural analysis.

Town Clerk John Hanright questioned the cost of an additional election and the logistics of getting all the questions on one ballot.

Also, the article will require a vote by the State Legislature. But DeGeorge insists that it can and should be done.

Planning Board Chairman Gus Niewenhous has agreed to sponsor an article, suggested by DeGeorge last week, to limit the zones in which tattoo and body-piercing shops can operate.

DeGeorge also decided to combine his proposals addressing both permanent and temporary Town Administrator vacancies into one article.

Instead of 10 trips to the podium, DeGeorge will stand before the Town Meeting eight times.
