STONEHAM , MA - The Cum Laude Chapter of the National Honor Society at Stoneham High School held its evening induction at the high school on Monday, Feb. 12, 2001.
This year The Spartan Chorale under the direction of Mr. Robert Lague sang the National Anthem. Mr. Thomas Ryan, Principal of the High School, gave the Welcome Address, and Mrs. Margaret Puffer, one of the National Honor Society's Advisors, made the Introductions. The officers--President Kathleen M. Doherty, Vice-President Daniel J. Blanchard, Secretary Elizabeth Breen and Treasurer Elizabeth M. Francis--spoke about the principles of the Society: scholarship, leadership, character and service.
Xavier Garcia introduced the Honors Address speaker, Mr. Wayne Fillback, a social studies and American history teacher who has taught and coached cross-country for the past 30 years at Stoneham High School. Xavier commended Mr. Fillback in his introduction as a caring teacher who maintains the highest academic standards in his courses and as an inspiring coach and role model. Mr. Fillback focused his remarks on the importance of doing one's best and meeting the challenges of the future, whatever they may be. He also stressed the importance of continuing education in today's fast-paced world.
A musical interlude was provided by the Spartan Chorale which sang “Gloria in Excelsis" by Antonio Vivaldi and "Twelve Gates into the City" arranged by Larry Shackley. Grace Kim accompanied the Chorale.
