STONEHAM, MA - The following questions are for the candidates running in the contested races of the 2001 Town Election set for April 3.

The candidates will issue statements introducing themselves to voters in the March 21 edition of this paper. In those statements the paper asks that the candidates answer the questions below for their respective races.

Hopefully, this written exchange of ideas among candidates will help the people of Stoneham to decide which circles to fill in on election day.

Questions for candidates:

Board of Selectmen

1) What would be the first thing that you would cut from the Town budget and what would you never touch?

2) In light of your response to question one, how would you balance the budget (explain your strategies for decreasing costs or increasing revenue)?

School Committee

1) What parts of state mandated Education Reform should the local school district embrace, and what aspects should the district fight to change?

2) What in the Stoneham school system most needs improvement, and how would you improve it (be specific)?

Planning Board

1) List your favorite and least favorite zoning bylaws, and explain your reasons.
