STONEHAM, MA -Public Works Chief Bob Grover estimated snowfall to be 15 inches in Stoneham as of 5 p.m. Tuesday, and the flakes were still falling.

All 27 Public Works employees were out, each in a different vehicle, and 22 private trucks were hired.

“I’ve got guys working 16, 17 hours straight,” Grover said.

Grover gave an estimate for dough as well as snow, reporting that the storm has cost Stoneham $75,000 just for clearing the roads.

“There goes our snow removal account,” Grover said.

Damage estimates were not in as of Tuesday night, but tree limbs and snapped wires were causing mayhem all over town.

Stoneham joined Wakefield, Middleton and Lynnfield in losing electricity and phone service in different neighborhoods at different times on Tuesday.

“We apologize if snow ends up in your driveway,” Grover told the townsfolk. “But it has to go somewhere.”

Most people wish it would just go away — except, of course, for the school children who have enjoyed a rare triple snow-day on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Town Administrator search

Ron Florino has moved over from his Town Accountant post to take control as Acting TA, and the search for a new permanent TA is underway.

When the Town last went looking for a new TA eight years ago, 175 applications flooded Town Hall. So far 19 have come in.

Selectman Cosmo Ciccarello said that this may be indicative of the difference between the past national search and the current statewide approach.
