Two vie for School Committee spot

STONEHAM, MA - Only two people — David Sheils and Thomas Noonan — have written letters asking for appointment to the one-year opening on the School Committee.
The deadline for submitting letters passed on April 18 at 4 p.m.
The opening was created when member Mary Pecoraro was elected to the Board of Selectmen on April 3. She had to step down from the School Committee under Stoneham law. One year remains on her elected term.
A joint committee of the Selectmen and remaining School Committee members will fill the one-year opening. This process begins with a request for letters of application from interested parties. Then the letters received are reviewed and the appointee is announced.
“We have a meeting with the School Committee on April 25, and we may have an answer by then,” said Selectmen Chairman Tony Kennedy.
David Sheils of Collincote Street lost this year’s race for the three-year term on the School Committee by 430 votes to Daniel Moynihan. Sheils said that he plans to run for re-election in a year if appointed. And he cites his past service on the Middle School Feasibility Committee and work with the Central School PTO as credentials.
Thomas Noonan of Charles Street said that he will fill in for one year and not run for re-election. He said that “walking a mile in (the School Committee’s) shoes will be enlightening.”
