STONEHAM, MA - Also at their May 1 meeting, Selectmen approved the charter of a Chapter 70 Committee.

The Committee will include one Selectman, one School Committee member, one Finance Board member and four citizens as the seven voting members, plus the Superintendent of Schools and Town Administrator ex officio.

The purpose of the committee as explained in the charter is to become familiar with ongoing legislative proposals relating to Chapter 70 funding for education; to communicate with the State Legislature; to attend relevant state hearings; lobby for Stoneham’s fair share of funding from the perspective that Stoneham has historically received less than other comparable communities; to communicate with the Selectmen about all developments; and to stay abreast of other sources of state and federal funding for education.

The desired end result of the Committee’s efforts is described in the charter: “confirmation of Stoneham’s proper Chapter 70 increase by March 31, 2002, in sufficient time to balance the budget for Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2003.”

The Committee will present quarterly reports to Selectmen.

To apply to serve on the Chapter 70 Committee contact the Selectmen at 781-279-2680.
