Resident appeals for everyone to cut costs

STONEHAM, MA - Crystal Drive resident Chuck DeCoste wants his fellow townspeople to band together to cut costs and improve the quality of life in Stoneham.
By recycling as much as possible — to lessen trash tonnage charges — and shoveling sidewalks instead of relying on the DPW, residents can keep municipal costs down and save services from the cutting block.
“I saw a story on TV about American Airlines,” DeCoste said. “They saved thousands just by going from two- to one-olive salads.”
DeCoste wants to bring this corporate cost-cutting model to Stoneham.
“It’s kind of like an Andy Rooney — Did you ever wonder...” DeCoste laughs, but he’s serious.
Residents can suggest cost cutting ideas or offer general feedback by sending email to pitchin4stoneham@hotmail.com.
The American Standard plant in Tyler, Texas saves $70,000 a year by vacuuming its doormats instead of sending them out to be cleaned.
“It’s worth a shot,” DeCoste said.
