STONEHAM, MA -

Abandon ship

Town Administrator Jeff Nutting left, Community Development Director Steve Sadwick finishes Friday, Assistant Superintendent of Schools Elizabeth Keroack is leaving at the end of the school year, the Police Chief is retiring in October, and the Gutierrez Company may abandon plans to build in Stoneham.

This transitional period comes at a bad time for Stoneham as the local economy slows and the town faces a school building project millions overbudget, ongoing drainage problems and rising property taxes.

However, new membership on the Board of Selectmen and the School Committee may provide fresh energy after town government settles into its new look.

Selectmen are interviewing more candidates for TA this week, and the School Committee will appoint a search committee to replace Keroack at the June 25 meeting. Rumors abound that Sadwick’s position will not be filled. And the decision to hire from within or make a broad search for the new police chief could extend that process like the TA search.

Town Common celebration

At 6 p.m. on Thursday night the town will formally celebrate the completion of the Town Common. Everyone is invited.

Town Concerts

The U.S. Air Force Band of Liberty kicks off the Chamber of Commerce Concert Series on the Town Common at 7 p.m. Thursday.
