STONEHAM, MA - Local oracle and author
Sam Lembo predicted the War on Terrorism, he discussed military strategy with the King of Hungary during World War II, and he’s coming to the Stoneham Public Library on Dec. 17 and 19.
Lembo has written a book, “Boiling Mad,” about his life and his views on world affairs. He will be at the Library all day on Dec. 17 and 19 to sign copies of his book and talk politics with his former townspeople.
Lembo grew up in Stoneham in the 1930s and lived in town, except for his years in the service, until leaving for Arizona 23 years ago.
He writes about battling American enemies abroad, such as religious fundamentalism, and challenging the demons at home, including political corruption and racism.
Arson trial
Gary Tilden, 65, of 4 Nixon Lane will be in Woburn District Court on Jan. 28 for a status hearing. Tilden, charged with setting a rash of fires in Stoneham this September, remains in jail, where he has been since his Sept. 26 arrest.
Court documents reveal that Tilden was convicted of arson, theft and burglary in Maine in the early 1990s. He faces nine charges this time around: one count of burning a building, one count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, one count of threatening to commit a crime, one count of breaking into a depository (the mailboxes at his Nixon Lane apartment complex), one count of possession of a burglarious tool, two counts of credit card fraud under $250 and two counts of receiving a fraudulent credit card.
Emergency boxes
Individuals who fear that no one will be able to answer the door in an emergency can have a box containing house keys — accessible by only the Police and Fire Departments — attached to the exterior of their homes.
Call the Town Hall for information at 781-279-2600. The box and installation cost around $50.
Clean Elections
Governor Jane Swift has said she will include $23 million for the Clean Election program in a supplemental budget put before the Legislature.
The program, presumed dead after the Legislature decided not to fund it, may rise again when the dust clears from the state budget battle this week.
