Mishap floods Franklin Street

STONEHAM, MA - A Franklin Street water main burst Monday, flooding and temporarily closing Franklin near Spencer Street.
“When D & R (the contractor working on the Franklin Street reconstruction project) put in a new drainage line across the road, they had to thread it under a gas main and over a water main. The drain line was too close to the water main and it put pressure on it, causing one of the rings on the water main to crack,” said DPW Deputy Director Larry Brophy.
The result was flooding that tied up traffic on Franklin Street Monday afternoon and a loss of water service to neighbors. But the DPW and men from D&R responded quickly: the road was reopened and water service was restored by the evening.
