Stone Zoo shuts down for the winter
Published on December 26th, 2001
STONEHAM, MA- In an effort to hasten construction on the eagerly anticipated “Treasures of the Sierra Madres” at Stone Zoo and in response to a $1.5 million cut in State subsidy, Zoo New England announced today that Stone Zoo will close for the winter, beginning Jan. 1, 2002. This closure will allow heavy construction equipment to move freely throughout the Zoo without endangering Zoo guests, while saving resource during a three-month period when the Zoo typically sees fewer than 4,000 visitors.
This temporary closure will be in effect until April, at which time Stone Zoo will reopen to the public in time for spring festivities. “Treasures of the Sierra Madre” will open by late May. Throughout the closure, Stone Zoo will continue to offer educational programs for members and the public. For more information on those opportunities, call (617) 989-2093.
“By using this time to work on the more demanding construction aspects of the exhibit, we will be able to present our guests with a great experience more quickly,” said Cynthia Mead, Stone Zoo Site Director. “This is also one way of saving funds while having a relatively minimal impact on our supporters.”
“Treasures of the Sierra Madre” will depict the wildlife found in the high elevation arid lands of Southwestern United States and Mexico. Guests will discover such indigenous species as tarantulas, bats, and Gila monsters living in an abandoned mine and adobe ruins, while jaguars and cougars roam the rugged landscape.
