High speed smash and grab at Spartan Rental
Published on January 30th, 2002
STONEHAM, MA - Thieves crashed a truck through the rear delivery bay of Spartan Rental & Equipment overnight last Wednesday and stole a computer, cash, tools and a six-foot long custom grill.
No one was hurt. No one was caught. No one witnessed the break.
According to Stoneham Police Detective George Alger, the size of the grill indicates that at least two people broke in to the 440 Main Street store and that they drove a truck. The size of the hole in the building, 15 feet across, backs up the truck theory.
The thieves took an odd haul: an out of date computer, a small amount of petty cash, a box of tools and the type of barbecue grill one might rent for a large outing — the first annual Smash and Grab Perps of Eastern Mass Family Picnic perhaps.
If caught, the thieves will be charged with felony breaking and entering at night, larceny over $250 (the grill cost more than $500) and malicious destruction of property.
Police found clues at the scene and are investigating.
