Water leak at Central School
Published on January 30th, 2002
STONEHAM, MA - A leak from a one-inch water pipe can wreak havoc on a building as Central School staff and students found out last week.
Connelly told the School Committee that a plumbing contractor was in the school repairing a very minor leak when one plumber accidentally caused the pipe to burst. It was 20 minutes before the shut off valve could be located in the new building and the gushing waters stopped.
While classrooms beneath the third floor accident sustained damage, none of it appears to be permanent, Connelly said.
Connelly called the situation an "unfortunate accident," adding that the plumber who caused the mess "was beside himself." The plumbing company has been very cooperative and has assumed responsibility.
The School Building Committee toured the school following the accident, and the consensus was that no permanent damage appears to have been sustained.
Education Commissioner to visit Stoneham
State Commissioner of Education David Driscoll had to decline an invitation to the dedication ceremony of the new Central School on Saturday, but he plans to visit the school soon.
Students and staff are schedule to welcome Driscoll to their new building bright and early on March 6. Connelly invited members from the School Committee to attend.
"We're very excited to have him," Connelly said.
The ex officio members are TA Dave Berry, Selectman Mary Pecoraro and Finance Board member Jim Gard.
