DPW asks Town Meeting for $600K to prevent flooding
Published on February 27th, 2002
STONEHAM, MA–The “other” article at Town Meeting is no small change. Everyone’s talking — including this newspaper — about the school article, but the DPW will request $600,000 for drainage work in Article 1.
Public Works Director Bob Grover said the money will pay for design and construction of work needed to prevent flooding in the Oak Street neighborhood (in rainfall up to the town’s standard of a 10 years storm). The work is part of the Town’s ongoing attempt to improve drainage townwide based on a 1998 engineering survey. Other options for the Oak Street area involve land takings.
Grover said the work, mostly widening pipes, should take six months from the time engineers are told to proceed with designs.
“We’re not giving them the go ahead until we know we have the money,” Grover said.
The Finance Board has recommended favorable action. Town Meeting has the final say on March 4.
