STONEHAM, MA -
Fore!
Carl Marchio is negotiating the final details of a contract to become Stoneham’s new golf pro and steward of the town courses, Unicorn and the Oaks.
Town Administrator David Berry and Town Counsel Bill Solomon plan to meet with Marchio this week. Marchio won the contract put out to bid in December, after Selectmen decided not to renew an option on longtime pro Paul Munro’s contract.
Marchio is from North Reading, and he has worked as a pro at Mount Hood in Melrose and most recently at Gannon in Lynn and Meadow Brook Country Club in Reading. The town hopes to get more for less under the new contract. Time will tell.
The Town is also posting for a new groundskeeper.
With the warm weather teasing New England, local golfers are anxiously awaiting the start of the season.
“It’s not fair to rush him (Marchio). He’s got a lot to get ready, but this is great weather,” said Selectman and golfer Bob Sweeney.
Smoking in the Boys Club
The Board of Health revisited the issue of smoking at Bingo at its Feb. 26 meeting. But smokers have nothing to worry about — besides cancer, heart disease and the smell — smoking will not be banned. The Board simply wants to improve ventilation at the Dale Court facility.

NStar fine may be severe
The State Attorney General recommended NStar pay $22.5 million, not the $3.2 million the energy provider had suggested in talks this past fall.
The fine could be paid out in the form of a rate cut, but the State is still investigating the details, and NStar is protesting the decision.
